Seattle Seahawks secondary lacks interceptions and...

The Seattle Seahawks secondary has had difficulty making plays on defense over the past year or so, particularly regarding takeaways. This is to be expected with the Legion of Boom now being a historic reference point, but this unit will have to step up in future games if the team wishes to compete in a loaded NFC.

The Seahawks secondary has recorded just two interceptions throughout their past 13 games, postseason included. This includes one interception through the first three games of 2019, which safety Bradley McDougald tallied off a deflection from Steelers wide receiver Donte Moncrief in Week 2. It should be noted Lano Hill also picked off Mason Rudolph on an attempted two-point conversion early in the fourth quarter although the stat isn’t recorded per NFL rules.

There are myriad reasons for the lack of INTs, from the aforementioned loss of key members of the heralded LOB to a dearth of pass-rushing production. Regardless, Pete Carroll has a knack for developing defensive backs, and this group must perform better under his expectations.

The pass rush led by Jadeveon Clowney and Ziggy Ansah has been lackluster overall, and the lack of pressure is a major factor in the Seahawks defense not living up to expectations and the secondary not producing much. However, the secondary must find ways to stick to their receivers, tackle efficiently and create takeaways when given the opportunity.

It is likely that we will never see another unit replicate the production of a legendary defensive backfield, which was assembled after catching lightning in a bottle in the NFL draft. Seattle has players in the secondary who could eventually develop into standouts, like Shaquill Griffin and Marquise Blair. However, it is unfair to expect that the Seahawks will forge another outstanding unit just because they did it once before. Recording more than two interceptions in the next 13 games would be a start towards improvement for this young group.
