Saquon Barkley defends PSU coach James Franklin...

Earlier this week, Penn State head football coach James Franklin was named in a lawsuit filed by former university physician, Scott A. Lynch, claiming the coach repeatedly forced he and the medical staff to rush players back out onto the field.

In addition to Franklin, who denied the claims, athletic director Sandy Barbour, other school personnel and Penn State University were named as co-defendants.

“I think you guys all know [that on Monday] Penn State Health issued a statement rejecting Dr. Lynch’s claims,” Franklin said during his weekly news conference at Beaver Stadium.

“As always, the health and well-being of our student athletes is of the utmost importance to us.”

Several current and former Penn State players have come to Franklin’s defense following the accusations, including current New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who played under Franklin from 2015-2017.

Barkley specifically recalled an ankle injury from 2015, claiming that he tried to force his way back out onto the field, but was stopped and shut down by Franklin.

“I personally wanted to get back on the field as fast as I could,” Barkley told NJ Advance Media. “And play as fast as I could. James Franklin was awesome for me. I tried to force it and he just wouldn’t allow me force it. I sat out the next two weeks and was able to come out and be healthy the rest of the season.

“Coach Franklin’s been nothing but a role model and mentor to me. I feel like he’s part of my family.”

As part of the lawsuit, Lynch contends that Penn State removed him from his post as orthopedic physician for the team and director of athletic medicine for the university following repeated complaints about the pressure Franklin was putting on him.

Lynch is seeking more than $50,000 in damages from the university, claiming they violated his rights as a whistleblower who was merely looking out for the players.

“For me, James Franklin is great mentor and a great coach,” Barkley concluded. “My time at Penn State was amazing to me, and to all of my teammates, from what I know.”
