Don’t expect a free agency spending spree

Don't expect a free agency spending spree

The Dallas Cowboys are going to the offseason with a large amount of cap space for the first time in years. But don’t look for them to go spending it all.

For the Dallas Cowboys, this feels like a new situation for them this offseason. The Cowboys have a ton of salary cap space and don’t need to cut or restructure contracts.

The problem in Dallas is that they also have 31 free agents they could try to re-sign. So a lot of that money will be going into retaining their own players.

If owner Jerry Jones truly believes that the team he put on the field last season was a championship team, then he’s going to try and bring back most of those players. But, the money won’t start flowing for those other 28 players until quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver Amari Cooper, and cornerback Byron Jones get their contracts done.

Most of the Cowboys salary cap will likely be going to these three players. And as much as fans would like to see Jones gone and Prescott to take a pay cut, it’s not going to happen.

One area of salary cap relief might be found in defensive end Tyrone Crawford. Scheduled to make a cap hit of $9.1 million in 2020, the Cowboys could approach Crawford to take a pay cut coming off an injury-plagued season where he landed on Injured Reserve after only four games. Crawford could also be a candidate to be released, giving the team even more room to sign others.

In the meantime, you may be wondering which free agents the Cowboys might want to bring back this offseason outside of the big three. Well, here is a list of players I believe will be back in Dallas next season .. and those who won’t.
