Davis Webb may spend the week doing his best Sam Darnold impression.
The former Giants and Jets quarterback signed with the Bills’ practice squad. Buffalo just so happens to be the Jets’ Week 1 opponent Sunday.
“It’s kind of what this league is, man. It is a business,” Darnold said Monday. “It’s just crazy. I talked to him yesterday. He just said, ‘See you in a week.’ It is crazy to think about how all that happens and happens so fast. But glad that he signed somewhere. I’ll be really happy to see him next week.”
Webb signed to the Jets’ practice squad last year, after getting cut by the Giants, and made it to the active roster by November. He may spend this week serving as the Bills’ scout-team quarterback in practice, meaning he would be playing the role of Darnold against the Bills defense.
“He’s seen me play and seen what I do pre-snap and all that for the last year or so. So hopefully he’s got it down by now,” Darnold said with a grin.
Bills coach Sean McDermott downplayed a question about using Webb for his knowledge of the Jets offense.
“We don’t do that for — I know people sometimes do that out there — we do it for the player,” McDermott told reporters in Buffalo.
Former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward spent training camp helping out at practices as a coaching intern and will stick around for the fall in an official capacity. The Jets hired the two-time Super Bowl champion as an offensive assistant. He will help wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson.
“I think that’s a great addition for us,” head coach Adam Gase said. “He’s done a lot of really good things with that group, helping out with those guys. It was the right time for him. He’s excited for the opportunity.”
Wide receiver Robby Anderson (calf) and cornerback Trumaine Johnson (hamstring) are “trending in the right direction” for Sunday’s season opener, Gase said. Both had missed practice time recently.
Right guard Brian Winters missed time in training camp with a shoulder injury, but declared himself “pain-free” Monday.
“It was just a minor tweak,” he said. “I’m totally good now and I’ll be good for the season.”
The Jets’ starting line did not play together at all in any preseason games, but Winters does not believe it will be an issue for the veteran group.
RB Eli McGuire, after getting cut by the Jets on Saturday, signed to the Browns’ practice squad. The Browns will play the Jets in Week 2.
Gase, who sported a beard all training camp, was freshly shaved for Week 1.
“Just felt right at the time,” he said with a grin.
The bearded Winters said he was disappointed.
“I told him today, ‘You look like a totally different dude,’ ” Winters said.
The Jets re-signed LB Albert McClellan, opening a roster spot by putting OL Brent Qvale (knee) on injured reserve.
The team also announced it signed WR/PR Greg Dortch, RB Josh Adams and TE Ian Bunting to its practice squad. There is one open spot left.
